SERIES AGAINST SAM HOUSTON
All-time record: First meeting

GAME ACTIONS

  • UH and Sam Houston will meet for the first time. The teams will face each other again next season (Sept. 6) in Honolulu.
  • The game is UH’s first in the state of Texas since the 2020 New Mexico Bowl at Toyota Stadium in Frisco, Texas. Hawaii defeated Houston 28-14.
  • UH holds an all-time record of 39-18 (.684) against current members of Conference USA. Most of its games have been against three teams – UTEP (18-13), New Mexico State (11-1) and Louisiana Tech (8-3), primarily when all were members of the Western Athletic Conference.
  • UH (1-1) did not play last week after a two-game home opener that included a win over Delaware State and a loss to UCLA.
  • Under the head coach Timmy ChangUH is 0-2 after the off weeks. Hawaii has had one off week in each of the last two seasons. This season’s schedule includes three off weeks (Weeks 2, 5, 13).
  • UH has a 1-11 away record under Chang (0-6 in 2022; 1-5 in 2023).
  • Sam Houston (1-1) is coming off a 45-14 road loss to UCF in Orlando, Fla. The Bearkats opened the season with two consecutive road games, including a 34-14 season-opening win over Rice.
  • UH has lost its last four non-conference road games, with the last win coming at New Mexico State in 2021.
  • This week’s road game is the first of five road games for the Warriors in 2024, their fewest since 2007 (not counting the COVID-hit 2020 season). The trip to Huntsville will total approximately 8,040 air miles and 120 ground miles.
  • UH’s roster includes eight players from the state of Texas, including key contributors QB Brayden Schager (Highland Park), WR Pofele Ashlock (Euless), WR/RS Tylan Hines (Mt. Pleasant), CB Nockenstein (Angleton) and DL Daniel “Sauce” Williams (San Antonio).
  • Schager needs 65 passing yards to reach 7,000 yards in his career. Only four other UH quarterbacks have reached that milestone. He also needs a passing touchdown to tie Chevan Cordeiro for sixth all-time and three more to tie Garrett Gabriel for fifth all-time. If Schager starts at QB this week, he will tie Gabriel for second all-time with 25 consecutive starts. The program record is 26 set by Bryant Moniz in 2009-11.
