Rams’ HC Sean McVay is brutally honest about Stetson Bennett’s place in the rankings

Rams’ HC Sean McVay is brutally honest about Stetson Bennett’s place in the rankings

Stetson Bennett had a rough season opener for the Los Angeles Rams against the Dallas Cowboys with four interceptions, but finished the game strong with a game-winning touchdown. Currently, Bennett is considered the favorite to replace Matthew Stafford in Weeks 1 and 2 with Jimmy Garoppolo out, but head coach Sean McVay sees things differently. While Bennett may be the favorite on paper, McVay wants to see what else his quarterback can do on the field before the regular season ends.

“I think we need to see more work,” McVay told reporters. “What I liked was what I mentioned to you … being able to stay together. That’s a tough thing when you have the ball (and) when you lose it a couple of times. It was (a tough situation). He kind of mentioned it to you in the postgame interviews where he thought he saw some things and then the mistakes were pretty costly, but he just kept playing. He kept fighting. The guys around him kept believing in him. I was really impressed with the resilience he showed.”

Although Bennett found a way to win the game, there are still important things he needs to work on. That includes taking care of the ball, something McVay values.

“All of those mistakes are correctable, and in many cases they’re not necessarily correct, with the exception of … well, some of them were bad decisions and some of them were just not the way you want to throw … the kind of layered throw,” McVay said.

Stetson Bennett is entering his second season in the league and will most likely be looking to climb the rankings. It’s not certain if his performance in the season opener helped him do that, but Bennett knows what he needs to do to continue to improve.

“That was probably the weirdest game I’ve ever been in,” Bennett said after the game. “But I told myself we’d take it all today. My goal was not to make any mental mistakes. It was basically about executing the offense the right way.”

Bennett has two more games to show what he can do and work his way up the Rams’ standings, but McVay seems undecided about giving him the starting job just yet. Stafford should be healthy and ready to play in Week 1, but if something were to happen, it’s currently unclear who the replacement will be. Jimmy Garoppolo was brought in to replace Stafford, but will miss the first two weeks of the regular season due to a suspension under the PED policy.

Bennett is likely to be the favorite, but McVay looks like he will have to wait and see.
