Record heat is back this week!

Record heat is back this week!

PHOENIX – A high pressure area is building up and causing temperatures to skyrocket!

In the valley, temperatures will be in the triple digits again throughout the week and will slowly reach record levels in the coming days.

A Warning of excessive heat is now in effect from Wednesday morning to Sunday evening.

This means that Wednesday to Sunday are ABC15 Weather Action Days as a reminder to do something in these dangerously hot temperatures. Drink plenty of fluids, spend as little time outside as possible in the afternoon, and never leave children or pets in the car, no matter how quickly you have to run an errand.

Between Wednesday and Sunday, temperatures in Phoenix could reach 43 degrees, unprecedented for this time of year.

The last day of 110 degrees Fahrenheit ever recorded in Phoenix was September 19, 2010. That record could be broken later this week.

Our drought has only gotten worse in recent months, partly due to the hotter and drier monsoon we have been experiencing. There is only about a week left of torrential rain before the monsoon season officially ends on September 30th, and the chance of rain is zero.

So far this monsoon season, Phoenix has only received 0.74 inches of rain. Our 30-year average (which is considered our normal rainfall amount) is 2.43 inches. But it’s important to remember that this is down from the previous 30-year average of 2.71 inches (from 1981 to 2010) as the climate in our valley continues to get hotter and drier.
