Rescue crews respond to reports of car in Schuylkill River in Fairmount Park in Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — Rescue teams are on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia’s Fairmount Park after reports that a car had entered the water.

The 911 call came in around 3:45 a.m. Friday in the 1200 block of Kelly Drive at the Girard Avenue Bridge.

Since then, rescue workers have been searching the water.

A video from Helicopter 6 showed what appeared to be an oil slick on the water. Rescue workers were seen searching the area.

Witness Anthony Manduzio said he was fishing when he saw the car plunge into the water.

“I saw a car traveling at a high rate of speed on Kelly Drive, just before it reached the Girard Bridge, hit the brakes and put the car in reverse,” Manduzio said.

He said the next thing he saw was the car back in the water. Manduzio said he ran and called 911.

He said the car hit a pillar.

“So I went into the water about knee deep, yelled ‘hello’ and threw rocks at the windshield, but got no response. 911 told me not to go in the water,” Manduzio said.

Manduzio said he could see the driver through the windshield.

“They looked like they had long hair and were kind of bent over,” he said.
