Review of the Summer Olympics: The top athletes of the US team from Minnesota bring home 12 medals

After two weeks of nerve-wracking competition, the 2024 Olympic Games are over. Minnesota athletes performed outstandingly in a variety of disciplines, bringing home 12 medals, including gold medals in gymnastics, basketball and swimming.

Here is a summary:

Napheesa Collier, 27

Napheesa Collier of the Minnesota Lynx shared gold with Team USA after defeating France in the women’s basketball final.

For Collier, it is the second Summer Olympics and for Team USA the eighth gold medal in a row.

Anthony Edwards, 22

Minnesota Timberwolves star Anthony “Ant-Man” Edwards won gold with Team USA after defeating France in the men’s basketball final, continuing one of the most dominant winning streaks in international sports.

This is Edwards’ first Olympic competition.

Sunisa Lee, 22

Suni Lee of St. Paul had a successful return to the Olympics, winning three medals. She won bronze in the all-around and on the uneven bars and shared gold in artistic gymnastics with Simone Biles and the rest of the U.S. team.

Lee now has six Olympic medals, including three from the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, where she took home gold, silver and bronze.

Regan Smith, 22

Regan Smith of Lakeville has added five Olympic medals to her collection.

She won three silver medals in the women’s 100-meter backstroke, 200-meter butterfly and 200-meter backstroke, as well as two gold medals in the 4×100-meter medley relay.

At the Tokyo Olympics, Smith won two silver medals – one in the 200-meter butterfly and the other in the 4×100-meter medley relay – as well as a bronze medal in the 100-meter backstroke.

Sarah Bacon, 27

University of Minnesota diver Sarah Bacon and her partner Kassidy Cook won a silver medal in synchronized diving from the 3-meter springboard. It was the first time the United States won a medal in the event since 2012. Their last names inspired a funny nickname: Cook N’Bacon.

Jordan Thompson, 27

Edina native Jordan Thompson won the silver medal in the women’s volleyball gold medal match against Italy on Sunday.

For Thompson, this will be her second Olympic Games representing the U.S. national team after defeating Brazil in her golden debut in Tokyo.
