Warner Bros. has released the trailer for Bong Joon Ho’s “Mickey 17,” the long-awaited sequel to the director’s Best Picture-winning film “Parasite.” The sci-fi thriller is based on Edward Ashton’s 2022 novel “Mickey7” and stars Robert Pattinson as an “expendable” employee named Mickey Barnes.

In the novel, Mickey is sent on dangerous missions to colonize an ice planet. When one version of Mickey dies, a duplicate is created to replace him and retain most of his memories.

In addition to Pattinson, the cast includes Steven Yeun, Naomi Ackie, Toni Collette and Mark Ruffalo.

“Mickey 17” is directed and written by Bong, who also produces with his company Offscreen. Other producers are Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner of Plan B and Dooho Choi of Kate Street Pictures.

Warner Bros. has postponed “Mickey 17” in its theatrical schedule a few times, most recently from March 29, 2024 to the current date in January 2025. When the change was announced, sources said diversity that the decision was made to secure a release window for IMAX and to allow more time to complete the project, which had been impacted due to the Hollywood strikes and various production delays.

Mickey 17 is Bong’s first feature film following the huge success of his 2019 thriller Parasite, which follows a working-class Korean family who treacherously infiltrate the home of a wealthy family. Parasite was the first foreign language film to win the Academy Award for Best Picture. The film also received Oscars for Original Screenplay, Directing and International Feature Film. Bong’s other notable films include Snowpiecer, Okja, Memories of Murder, The Host and Mother.

Pattinson played the title role in Matt Reeves’ “The Batman” in 2022, bringing a darker touch to Bruce Wayne. His recent science fiction productions include Christopher Nolan’s “Tenet” and Claire Denis’ “High Life.”

Mickey 17 hits theaters on January 31, 2025. Watch the trailer below.
