ALEXANDRIA – 400 dozen corn cobs.

Between 2,700 and 3,000 pork chops.

It’s time for the Alexandria Rotary Club’s 59th Annual Pork Chop and Corn Jubilee.

Like last year, it will take place on Wednesday, August 14, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Alexandria Fire Station. Takeout orders are also available.

The event requires dozens of Rotary Club volunteers, including a corn-husking crew that will begin shucking corn at 6 a.m.

Club members also help with set-up, take-out orders, selling tickets, boiling the corn (the firefighters do that), melting the butter, buttering the bread, grilling the pork chops, handing out the serving plates and take-out boxes, serving the pork, serving the corn, serving the coleslaw, serving the bread, serving the drinks, clearing the plates, wiping the tables, cleanup and more.

At last year’s event, the Rotary Club of the Alexandria Fire Department served nearly 2,200 meals. Members said the club received support from volunteers, in-kind sponsors and businesses to make the event a success.

Proceeds from the fundraiser will benefit the Rotary Club and the Alexandria Fire Department.

When asked what makes the event such a success every year, Charlie Meyer, Chairman of the Jubilee, replied:

“The community has always supported this event and Rotary has always donated the money to charity,” Meyer said. “It’s been that way for years. The partnership with the Alex Fire Department has made it even better!”
