The San Diego County Regional Airport Authority held a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Wednesday to open the new Terminal 1 parking garage at San Diego International Airport, which has 2,834 parking spaces.

The five-story T1 Parking Plaza will open in two phases. In the first phase, the number of parking spaces in the existing Terminal 1 parking lot will more than double.

Phase 2 is scheduled to open in late summer 2025, at which point total parking availability at San Diego International Airport will increase to nearly 8,500 spaces, according to airport officials.

“The opening of the first phase of the new T1 parking lot is more than just a milestone of the new T1 project. It represents a significant step forward in providing the aviation infrastructure our binational region needs and deserves,” said Gil Cabrera, Chairman of the Board of the Airport Authority.

“We can’t wait to come back in late summer 2025 and cut the ribbon on the new T1,” he said.

Designated parking spaces include 519 spaces for carpool vehicles and for electric/alternative fuel and fuel-efficient vehicles, 20 one-hour spaces and 65 spaces with electric vehicle charging stations.

The site’s sustainability features include a parking guidance system that helps drivers quickly find available parking spaces and a rainwater capture and reuse system that airport authorities say will prevent stormwater from entering San Diego Bay.

The first phase of the building includes a free tire filling station near the exit and baggage carts on all levels.

“Our customers have been waiting for this parking garage for several years and we are pleased to finally be able to meet the demand,” said Kimberly Becker, president and CEO of the airport authority. “We are committed to meeting our customers’ ground transportation needs no matter how they travel to and from the airport.”
