Scheifele’s 2 goals put the Jets past the Blackhawks in OT

Scheifele won with his 300th NHL goal, redirecting a pass from Kyle Connor into the slot. He equalized at 18:56 of the third period, scoring the equalizer with his backhand from just outside the goal area after a sharp shot from Nikolaj Ehlers.

Connor Hellebuyck made 25 saves in the Jets’ home opener (2-0-0). They won 6-0 to open the regular season at the Edmonton Oilers on Wednesday.

Ryan Donato scored for the Blackhawks (0-2-0), who lost their season opener 5-2 at Utah Hockey Club on Tuesday. Arvid Soderblom made 33 saves.

Donato gave Chicago a 1-0 lead at 16:52 of the second period. Patrick Maroon threw a pass from the left wall through the neutral zone to Donato, who carried it to the left faceoff circle where he fired a wrist shot to the short side.

That ended Hellebuyck’s 96-51 shutout streak to start the regular season after he made 30 saves on Wednesday.

Before Scheifele scored the equalizer, Alex Iafallo had a chance for Winnipeg at 14:06 of the third period. He took a centered pass from Haydn Fleury for a backhand shot from the slot, but was turned away by Soderblom.

Soderblom was then denied twice by Mason Appleton in nine seconds, first with a wrist shot from the other wall that had Nino Niederreiter rushing toward the goal crease at 16:34, then with a diving attempt at 16:43.

The Blackhawks were leading 7-2 after 17:54 of the first half until Andreas Athanasiou broke away, but his backhand was thwarted by a glove save from Hellebuyck.
