Orange County restaurant inspection records show two food service establishments had five or more violations in July, according to the latest data released by New York State.

An Indian restaurant in Newburgh had five non-critical violations and one critical violation in July. These included not adequately refrigerating potentially hazardous foods and improper storage of equipment and utensils. A camp in Chester had three non-critical violations and three critical violations in July. These included leaking, dented, rusty or swollen canned goods, improper storage of toxic chemicals and not adequate refrigerator space.

Other restaurants were criticized for failing to protect their food from possible contamination and for not taking effective measures against rodents and insects. In many cases, follow-up inspections of the restaurants revealed no violations.

Inspection reports are public documents, and the online database at data.recordonline.com contains the results of inspections in Middletown and across New York. Readers can see when a facility was last inspected and get a summary of the violations inspectors found.

The database can be searched by county, or you can enter a name or address to find records for a specific restaurant.

Each report is a snapshot and reflects the observations of a single day that the inspectors were at the restaurant.

Keep in mind that the world of restaurant inspections is fluid. Your favorite restaurant may have committed a handful of violations, then quickly cleaned up and passed the next inspection with no violations. A clean slate on one report also doesn’t mean that problems can’t arise later.

Many problems are caused by food service workers either ignoring standard procedures or arriving sick and transmitting foodborne illnesses.
