Shelter in Joliet: Armed robbery prompts police to ask Silver Falls Street residents to stay indoors; suspect at large

JOLIET, Ill. (WLS) – An armed robbery triggered a curfew in the southern suburb of Joliet on Thursday, police said.

Joliet police responded to a report of a robbery and were dispatched to the 500 block of Silver Falls Street at approximately 10:55 a.m.

A male suspect approached two 17-year-old girls who were sitting in a car parked nearby and held a gun to one of the girls’ neck while demanding her purse, police said.

The suspect grabbed her purse and vehicle keys, police said.

According to the police, the driver was able to get the key back at some point.

During an altercation a shot was fired, but no one was injured.

The girls chased the suspect as he ran east through the neighborhood. He was last seen near a home in the area.

Residents in the 500 block of Silver Falls Street were asked to stay safe around 11:30 a.m. while police searched for him.

Troy Heritage School was also notified.

The curfew was lifted about two hours later after police said “the immediate threat to the area has subsided.”

Two 17-year-old boys are in custody and may face charges, police said, but the original male suspect is still at large.

He is described as 1.70 m tall, weighing 136 kg, with dreadlocks and wearing very dark clothing.
