More than three months after filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, Red Lobster is closing 23 more stores across the country.

With the latest expected restaurant closures, the total number of closures in the U.S. is at least 129. In the latest wave, three restaurants are closing in Florida, Illinois and Virginia, two in Minnesota and New York, and one each in the following states: Arizona, California, Colorado, Georgia, Indiana, Missouri, North Carolina, Ohio and South Carolina.

In a 23-page court document filed Aug. 22 in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Middle District of Florida, the Orlando-based company said it was rejecting leases for an additional 23 locations through Saturday, Aug. 31.

On May 19, Red Lobster filed for bankruptcy after closing dozens of locations and announcing plans to “drive operational improvements” by simplifying the business. Documents later filed in federal court showed the bankruptcy was primarily due to significant debt, a carousel of CEOs, an all-you-can-eat shrimp fiasco and a 30% drop in guests since 2019.

Previous Red Lobster closures

In June, the company submitted a list of 228 rejected leases in bankruptcy filings that would continue to generate losses if it continued to operate as normal. According to Restaurant Business, that list included at least some of the restaurants it had already closed, meaning the company is at risk of closing another 129 restaurants.

That total appears to have been confirmed, as the 23 locations listed in last week’s court filing follow the closure of 106 restaurants in early summer.
