Six great antique and bookstores on the Jersey Shore

Six great antique and bookstores on the Jersey Shore

On the New Jersey shore, the beach isn’t the only attraction. Visitors can explore farmers markets, cafes, and a variety of shops, including those specializing in vintage furniture, china sets, and rare coins.

Browsing antique and thrift stores is part of the shore experience, says Christine Boardman, owner of Handlaget Design store in Ocean City.

Stocked with used furniture, clothing, kitchen supplies, knick-knacks and more, these shops not only offer a respite on cloudy and sweltering days, but also the chance to snag a beautiful piece to take back into town.

“It’s just fun – and sometimes you come home with something that looks beachy and is unique,” says Boardman, who also helps budget-conscious summer residents decorate their coastal rentals.

Whether you’re looking for a fun activity or a special second-hand find, the coast is full of antique and thrift stores with treasures.

Almost everything in Jeanne Hermann’s Cape May store costs less than $50. Out of the Past Antiques offers items ranging from vintage clothing, magazines and books to small furniture and sewing supplies dating from the 18th century to the 1980s. Hermann, a former librarian, began collecting items at public auctions in Lancaster and built her collection from there. “(There are) interesting things you’d like to take home from vacation,” she says.
