For Alex Morgan, it was a family affair as she prepared to say “see you later” to her fans and the game she has played professionally for 15 years.

Morgan played her final game with the San Diego Waves on Sunday against the North Carolina Courage, but before the game she posed for photos with her four-year-old daughter Charlie, who was wearing a matching orange, pink and teal San Diego Wave jersey with her mother.

Morgan announced her retirement on September 5. In an emotional and lengthy Instagram video, she said her decision to retire was “a long time coming,” but also highlighted the growth of professional women’s soccer over the years.

US soccer legend Alex Morgan announces retirement and pregnancy

“Charlie came to me the other day and said that when she grows up she wants to be a soccer player. And that made me incredibly proud,” said the former captain of the US women’s national team. “Not because I want her to be a soccer player when she grows up, but because there is a path that even a four-year-old can see right now. We are changing lives and the impact we have on the next generation is irreversible and I am proud of the hand I had in making that possible.”

During her historic career, Morgan won two World Championships and two Olympic medals, including the gold medal for Team USA in 2012 and the bronze medal in 2020. She also fought for equal pay for the women’s national team, which led to a historic agreement in 2022 that gave the women’s national team equal pay as the men’s national team.

Morgan and her husband, former professional soccer player Servando Carrasco, are expecting a second child.
