South Carolina seeks new AD; Ray Tanner takes on new role

The University of South Carolina announced Friday morning that the school is actively searching for a new athletic director.

Ray Tanner, who has served in his role since 2012, will transition to a new role once a new AD is found, USC President Michael Amiridis said during a scheduled board of trustees meeting Friday morning.

According to information released during the conference call, which GamecockCentral.com also attended, Tanner will assume the role of senior advisor to the president once a new athletic director is in place.

A university press release sent out following Friday’s BOT meeting also stated that Tanner would be named “Athletic Director Emeritus.”

The personnel agreement reached between Tanner and South Carolina runs through June 2028 and can be extended by mutual consent at that time.

Tanner will receive compensation of $987,500 through July 26, 2025. After that, his salary for the term of the contract for his new position will be $800,000.

“I am honored and humbled to have been so fortunate to be a part of this wonderful university and will continue to be,” Tanner said in the release. “I have thought for some time that it would be time for Carolina to have a new athletic director and the president and I have had those conversations. There was interest in me staying at the university. I agreed to stay in a new role because of my love for this university, this city and this state.”
