Springfield Mayor’s reaction to shooting at city’s hair salon

SPRINGFIELD, MA (WGGB/WSHM) — Three people are under arrest in connection with the shooting that was fired at a Springfield hair salon Thursday morning.

Springfield police tell us that officers working as special operations officers were notified of a shooting at a hair salon at 562 St. James Avenue when they reportedly saw a car driving away from the salon at a high rate of speed. Officers from Springfield’s C-3 Unit were in the area and saw the suspect’s car turn from St. James Avenue onto State Street.

We’re told Springfield police attempted to stop the car, but the driver, later identified as 43-year-old Victor Cabrera-Quinones, was reportedly weaving in traffic and ignoring red lights. Cabrera-Quinones then got caught in a traffic jam and turned himself in. Officers reportedly found and recovered a firearm in the car, which police said held 12 rounds of ammunition. Cabrera-Quinones was arrested.

Meanwhile, officers who arrived at the barbershop saw two people, 45-year-old Jesus Cabrera and 38-year-old Juan Rios, attempting to remove a shell casing from the incident. Officers arrested the suspects.

On Friday, Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno praised Springfield police officers for their work in apprehending these suspects.

Three of them were quickly arrested. I don’t want to say if I should say it, but we are on TV right now, so the police have done their job and now I need the support of the justice system so that we can keep these detained people off our street and out of my neighborhood,” Sarno explained.

No one was injured in the shooting, but the three suspects each face several charges, including carrying a loaded weapon and ammunition without a permit and tampering with or destroying evidence.
