FRIDAY NIGHT: Bayou Jam continues October 11th at Heritage Park with melodic New Orleans Mystics, elegant entertainers who stay true to their R&B roots and dress in appropriate outfits for each show. Attendees of the 6-8 p.m. show are invited to bring their chairs, blankets, coolers and picnic baskets to the park to enjoy this free Friday night concert. VILLAGERS: The Village Church Music Series continues October 18th in Lacombe with Those Olivers, showcasing their unique sound of warm harmonies and excellent guitar/keyboard/mandolin/bass, presented with a spicy Louisiana flair. Steve & Monica’s music will delight young and old alike. The duo recently performed at the Abita Springs Opry, the Three Rivers Art Festival and the Slidell Street Fair. FOUR STAGES: Abita Fall Fest on October 12th from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Abita Springs Trailhead. The event celebrates the art, music and culture of Abita Springs. rocking: The one and only Bruce Daigrepont, a South Louisiana cultural institution from his days as a fais-do dancer at the Maple Leaf Bar and original Tipitinas, will be performing at the Covington Trailhead on October 10 as part of the free Thursday night Rockin’ the Rails concerts occur continue. Daigrepont and his band will play Cajun and Zydeco music from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., singing the lyrics in Louisiana Cajun French.

LPO: The Sunset Symphony on the Lake: An Evening with the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra will take place on the Mandeville Lakefront on October 19th at 4:30 p.m. The Greater New Orleans Youth Orchestra will open the music.

TROUBADOUR: John Oates, known as part of the Hall & Oates duo, will headline this year’s Ozone Songwriter Showcase on October 25 at Fuhrmann Auditorium in Covington. The show “An Evening of Songs and Stories with John Oates” will feature this member of the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame and the American Songwriters Hall of Fame. FRIENDS: Samuel Wheelock will perform modern electric folk music Oct. 15 in the South Slidell Branch Meeting Room, 3901 Pontchartrain Drive, the third of four concerts presented by the nonprofit Friends of Slidell Library. BLUEGRASS: The Northshore Traditional Music Society will host its third and final Rivergrass Sessions concert on Oct. 18, concluding a series that brings some of the country’s best buegrass players to a stage in Covington. The show at Fuhrmann Auditorium will feature Seth Mulder & Midnight Run from the Great Smoky Mountains. TOGETHER: The Abita Springs Songwriter’s Circle meets the third Thursday of every month from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. at the Abita Springs Opry/Town Hall, 22161 Level St., for an evening of creative collaboration, sharing and encouragement. People from across the region are invited to this free, artist-friendly gathering. All styles of songwriters, musicians, singers and poets are welcome. MONSTER: Slidell Little Theater presents “She Kills Monsters” for another long weekend October 11-13, taking audiences into the world of fantasy role-playing games. A fast-paced, dramatic comedy of murderous fairies, nasty ogres and ’90s pop culture, author Qui Nguyen’s heartbreaking tribute to the geek and warrior in all of us. Director: Gary Mendoza. COZY MYSTERY: Veronica Blather is a sweet little old lady who spends most of her time solving the murders that happen every time she shows up. Understandably, she is having trouble finding an apartment! When her niece invites her to live in a retirement home for old knitters, it seems ideal – until one of its members dies as a result of drinking poisoned punch. In this fast-paced ensemble comedy, clues fall as quickly as corpses. Who did it? Come find out when The Village Theater Co. performs “Murder at the Crazy Quilt Club” during an evening dinner theater show on October 11th and 12th (doors open at 6:30 p.m.) or at a dessert matinee on the 13th. CLASSIC MURDER: Agatha Christie’s “Murder on the Orient Express” runs October 12-27 at 30 by Ninety Theater. For many it is a familiar story. Shortly after midnight, a snowdrift stops the Orient Express. The luxury train is surprisingly full for the time of year, but in the morning there are one fewer passengers. An American tycoon lies dead in his compartment, stabbed eight times, his door locked from the inside. Isolated and with a murderer in their midst, the passengers rely on Detective Hercule Poirot to identify the killer – just in case he or she decides to strike again. OUTSIDE: Wild Things on October 12th from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Headquarters, 61389 La. 434, in Lacombe. This free, annual fundraiser for the nonprofit Friends of LA Wildlife Refuges is one of the largest events at a National Wildlife Refuge in the United States. Enjoy canoe rides, pontoon boat rides, live music, delicious food, children’s arts and crafts events, and more. Tons of educational exhibitors. FEDERALIS: The Slidell Chapter of the National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association next meets on October 11th at 12:00 p.m. (second Friday of the month) at the Cornelius Community Center (the SECOND white house behind First Christian Church), 102 Christian Lane , in Slidell.
