Streameast domains seized by US authorities

Last weekend, U.S. law enforcement took decisive action against popular sports streaming site Streameast by seizing several of its domain names.

Streameast has made a name for itself especially in the USA, attracting over 15 million visitors per month who visit the site for live sports broadcasts.

The seizure of the domain came as a surprise to many users because instead of the usual links to live sporting events, they were greeted by a Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) banner.

Citing an arrest warrant from the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana, the banner warned that unauthorized distribution of copyrighted material could result in criminal prosecution.

The seized domains included the main site thestreameast.to and several backup domains such as streameast.io and streameast.xyz.

The ongoing battle against Streameast

The seizure of Streameast is part of a broader effort by US authorities to combat piracy, particularly in the area of live sports. In recent years, rights holders of major sporting events have expressed growing frustration with the increasing prevalence of illegal streaming.

They argue that current laws are not enough to effectively address the problem and call for stricter measures, such as blocking websites, to curb piracy.

While website blocking remains a contentious issue among U.S. lawmakers, domain name seizure represents a more immediate means of enforcement.

The U.S. Department of Justice has used this method repeatedly over the past decade as part of Homeland Security Investigations to target pirate websites, and Streameast’s recent seizure is the latest in this ongoing fight against illicit streaming.

Streameast’s quick comeback

Despite the domains being seized, Streameast has shown no signs of backing down. Shortly after the domains were taken offline, the site’s operators assured users on social media that they would continue operating.

The website’s administrators stressed that Streameast is committed to providing free and high-quality streaming services and criticized the US government’s actions as they target one of the few legitimate platforms.

The Streameast team said they had been expecting such a move and had prepared accordingly. With over 400 domains available, they quickly activated alternative domain names, including streameast.co, streameast.ec, and others.

A quick Google search for “streameast” yields several other domains.

The operators have pledged to keep the site running until affordable sports streaming options are available to everyone, and promised not to shut it down until that goal is achieved.

Streameast appeals domain seizures (latest update)

The latest update in this story concerns the warrant issued against the Tonic Registry (which oversees .to domains). This warrant did not include any additional documentation or explanation for the seizure of the domains.

Streameast now wants to appeal the decision in court. According to “Quick”, the lack of detailed reasons for the shutdown raises doubts about the legality of the arrest warrant and has led to the decision to take legal action.

One aspect of the case that Streameast highlighted is the lack of prior notice. In typical domain seizure cases, site operators are often not warned in advance to prevent them from taking evasive action.

Streameast pointed out that although the company has regularly received warnings under the DMCA, it has never been directly confronted with legal threats from copyright holders or authorities.

The operator further explained that it had previously switched to other hosting providers in response to DMCA complaints, but had never faced direct legal consequences. This sudden seizure without warning came as a surprise to the Streameast team.

The launch of Mirror Sites

Even though legal challenges lie ahead, Streameast is determined to keep its services running. The site has already launched several new mirror domains so users can continue streaming sports content.

These mirrors are listed in the Streameast mirror list to ensure that fans can access the platform despite ongoing legal pressure.

Future of Streameast and anti-piracy efforts

Streameast’s resistance suggests that this is far from the end of the story. While US authorities have managed to temporarily halt the site’s operations, the ongoing cat-and-mouse game between pirate streaming sites and law enforcement is likely to continue.

As this situation continues to unfold, it will be interesting to see how Streameast and U.S. law enforcement respond. Will Streameast continue to outmaneuver authorities, or will the government find new ways to enforce anti-piracy laws?

One thing is clear: the battle for live sports streaming is far from over. For more on this story, check out TorrentFreak’s report.
