Suspect found dead after standoff in Cranston

CRANSTON, R.I. (WLNE) — A suspect who police say shot his wife and then officers was found dead in his home after a lengthy standoff.

Cranston Police responded to a report that a man was expressing suicidal and homicidal thoughts from a home on Harding Avenue.

According to police, 69-year-old Neil Douglas, who was suffering from a serious illness, shot his wife before she could escape and call 911.

According to police, Douglas then fired at arriving police officers, but missed them and the bullets lodged in a house across the street.

After a SWAT team arrived, police finally entered Douglas’ home shortly after midnight Wednesday morning and found him dead inside. Police said he had sustained an apparent “self-inflicted gunshot wound.”
