Texans WR Stefon Diggs is out for the season with a torn ACL

Houston Texans wide receiver Stefon Diggs has a torn ACL and will miss the rest of the season, coach DeMeco Ryans said Tuesday.

Diggs’ knee injury occurred on a non-contact play in Houston’s 23-20 win over the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday.

Diggs, acquired in an offseason trade with the Buffalo Bills, ranked seventh in the NFL in catches (47) this season and was second on the Texans in receiving yards (496).

Diggs, 30, is a four-time Pro Bowl player who has had at least 1,000 receiving yards in each of the last six seasons, particularly notable in his 2020 season in which he led the NFL with a career-high 1,535 receiving yards.

The injury is another blow to a team already without leading receiver Nico Collins, who is out at least one more game after being placed on injured reserve with a hamstring injury.

With Diggs out, the Texans will have to use Tank Dell for a larger role on offense in their visit to the New York Jets on Thursday night. Dell’s production has declined this season after a standout rookie year in which he had 709 receiving yards and seven touchdowns in 11 games before breaking his leg.

He has 229 yards receiving this season and scored his second touchdown in Sunday’s win that improved the AFC South-leading Texans to 6-2.
