The Dodgers defeat the Yankees and take a commanding 3-0 lead

Freddie Freeman hit a home run for the third straight game and the Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the New York Yankees 4-2 on Monday to take a 3-0 lead in the World Series.

Walker Buehler got the start and got the win for the Dodgers, pitching five in five shutout innings.

“I couldn’t have asked for anything more from Walker tonight,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. “There are certain players … who just really thrive in the postseason.”

The Yankees’ offensive struggles continued even after Walker’s exit, as they were unable to continue until they got their last out. Alex Verdugo hit a two-run home run in the ninth inning to cut the deficit in half, but Gleyber Torres singled and ended the game in the next inning.

Freeman led off Game 3 with a two-run home run. He brought home Shohei Ohtani, who opened the night with a leadoff walk.

Los Angeles later added two insurance runs by playing old-fashioned National League baseball.

Mookie Betts hit an RBI single in the top of the third that scored Tommy Edman, who walked thanks to an Ohtani grounder and advanced to second.

In the sixth, Kiké Hernández plated Gavin Lux with a bloop single to right. Lux made it to second place after being hit with bad luck and stealing a bag.

New York continues to struggle to score points. The Yankees didn’t score more than three runs in a single game in the World Series, which won’t be enough against a powerful Dodgers lineup.

Aaron Judge, the American League MVP favorite, still hasn’t found his swing. After going hitless in three at-bats on Monday, Judge has just one hit in 12 at-bats against Los Angeles, for a .083 batting average.

Giancarlo Stanton was a bright spot for an otherwise dull offense, scoring two of New York’s five goals.

Ohtani played in Game 2 despite a left shoulder injury. He had no hits in three at-bats.

“We just have to stay focused and push,” Roberts said after the game about his team’s World Series chances. “To be completely honest, we gave up a lot of runs on offense tonight and still found a way to win a ball game. There has to be urgency. I don’t want to let these guys come up for air.”

Game 4 is on Tuesday and the Yankees’ offense needs to wake up if they want to avoid a sweep.

“We’re trying to get a game in tomorrow. That’s our focus,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said after the game. “Hopefully we can tell this amazing story and shock the world, but right now it’s about getting a lead, getting a play and forcing another and then go from there. “But we have to grab one first. “
