Dodgers vs. Yankees, 8:08 ET

I should probably just stop, right? I mean, three times in a row I picked the Yankees to win a game and lose three times in a row in this series. Losing three games isn’t the end of the world, but as I’ve mentioned before when teams (like the Astros this year) got off to a bad start early in the season, the small sample size makes this even bigger. Well, it’s certainly clear here that I can’t predict that a World Series game will save my bankroll. I’m not chasing because other sports are picking up the losses, but man, I need to get at least one win before the streak is over. Let’s go back to the drawing board with this game between the Dodgers and Yankees.

They might as well just start engraving his name on the World Series MVP trophy. Freddie Freeman has this under wraps as long as the Dodgers finish the series, which is also almost certain. Los Angeles now has four games to win. They seemed to be the better team in almost every inning of the series. Sure, they were behind at times, but they never seemed to lose focus and were able to achieve victories even in the face of defeat. They have beaten the Yankees 4-2 in consecutive games and have not trailed in the last 18 innings. They also scored first in all three games, which gives you momentum but also loosens up the pitching and makes the opponent tougher. The fact that the Dodgers can do this in a series when they don’t even have all of their best pitchers is scary for the rest of the league. They’re planning on having some sort of bullpen game tonight and their bullpen has been fantastic this postseason. There are a few matchups they’ll certainly avoid, but the Dodgers need to be confident they can win tonight and then have multiple starting options over the next three games if they’re needed.

The Yankees have to win at least one game here, right? Is there a bit of pride in winning a game instead of being defeated? Probably. Remember, if any franchise believes it’s possible to come back from a three-game deficit when no one has yet, the Yankees are the Yankees. They certainly need a better start to today’s game than yesterday. Their starter, Clark Schmidt, pitched 2.2 innings and opened the game with a walk. It wasn’t just a walk, but he took Ohtani over four pitches. Maybe Schmidt wasn’t well prepared or mentally ready for the moment. He settled down to take out Betts in the next shot, but then Freeman took him over the fence for the third time in a row. The Yankees were immediately drained of all energy and momentum. Luis Gil wants to give them a better start. Your right-hander had a very nice season with a 15-7 record, a 3.50 ERA and a 1.19 WHIP. He pitched only once in the playoffs, allowing two earned runs in four innings. He hasn’t pitched in 11 days, so expectations may have to be a little low here. He faced the Dodgers once this season, going 5.2 innings and allowing 3 earned runs in a 6-4 Yankees win.

Believe it or not, I’m not even a Yankees fan – and after picking them in three straight games, I’m losing more respect for them every day. The Dodgers were the best team in baseball this season and here they show why. I think it’s probably in your best interest to leave me out, but the Yankees have nothing going for them other than they need to win a game. I’ll back the Dodgers with plus money to win the trophy tonight.
