Georgetown’s women’s basketball team faced intense criticism after it paid homage to a former player who was shot by a police officer when she attacked him with a knife.

Dozens of social media users criticized the post, saying the former player had attacked the officer and was a threat to his life.

Shocking police body camera footage showed 6-foot-2 Sydney Wilson, 33, armed with a knife, charging toward officer Peter Liu as he attempted to conduct a welfare check on Wilson.

The commercial property manager punched the officer in the face several times before the officer fired his weapon. Liu retreated down the hallway before firing three more shots, killing Wilson.

Now Wilson’s old basketball team at Georgetown University has come to blows after they paid tribute to her on X.

The team’s statement read: “Georgetown Women’s Basketball mourns the tragic loss of Sydney Wilson (C’13). “Forever a Hoya.”

Since then, the post has been heavily criticized online and social media users have called for it to be removed.

One person said: “You should delete this out of shame.”

An X user with the username Honest Abe wrote: “Tragic loss? She literally attacked with a knife in her hand.”

Nik Berg said, “How is this real?”

The dispute came after police in Fairfax County, Virginia, released bodycam video detailing the incident.

It shows Officer Liu arriving at Wilson’s apartment in Reston, Virginia, at 10 a.m. on September 16 to conduct a welfare check.

Officer Liu — who has 14 years of crisis intervention experience — knocked on the door and Wilson answered it.

When the officer identified himself, she slammed the door again.

The police officer continued to knock for the next three minutes, but the 6-foot-tall Wilson opened the door and attacked him with a knife.

Wilson is accused of stabbing the officer in the face multiple times until the officer fired his weapon.

Liu retreated down the hallway before firing three more shots and calling for help.

Wilson received cardiopulmonary resuscitation at the scene but was pronounced dead at a local hospital from gunshot wounds.

Police Chief Kevin Davis said Liu did his best and kept the situation from getting worse.

“It could have been much, much, much worse; “The cut, gash and laceration he sustained was at the top of his forehead,” he said.

A psychologist asked police to conduct a welfare check on Wilson.

Davis admitted that these types of evaluations are usually done in conjunction with another psychologist.

However, the usual co-responder was not available at the time because another conversation was in progress.

Davis believes the doctor’s failure to show up on scene prevented the incident from becoming more fatal.

“Every time doctors get out of a police car and walk with a police officer to a door, to an accident scene, or to an outdoor scenario, they are putting themselves in some danger, and with that comes some risk.”‘

He added that he doesn’t know that a psychologist could have prevented the incident from turning out this way.

Wilson, a former Georgetown University basketball player, remembered her former school in an Instagram post.

While the internal investigation into the shooting continues, Officer Liu remains assigned to administrative duties.
