The McDonald’s fan favorite returns today after nearly a decade without a menu

After almost a decade of absence, McDonald’s is bringing a fan-favorite menu item back to the UK. Starting today and for a limited time only, the McRib will be back on menus nationwide.

Due to its rare, limited releases, the pork-based McRib has gained cult status among McDonald’s fans. It was first introduced by the fast food chain in 1981 before being “permanently” removed from menus in 2005.

However, this is not the case in Germany and Luxembourg, where the sandwich proved so popular after its initial release that it has remained a staple on the menu ever since.

And despite its departure, the sandwich has returned several times over the years. In the UK, it last appeared for a short period between 2014 and 2016. It has been theorized in the past that the McRib’s return is usually accompanied by falling pork prices, while McDonald’s has previously said the limited appearances were due to desire concerns They ensure that the menu is varied all year round.

It contains no bones, but still features an oddly shaped pork patty with grooves that look like ribs. As those who were around for the most recent release will remember, this is topped off with barbecue sauce, pickles and onions on a long bun.

Thomas O’Neill, head of menu at McDonald’s UK, said: “It’s more than just a sandwich; It’s a phenomenon. We’ve heard our fans loud and clear – the fan petitions and appeals on social media – and after nearly a decade of anticipation, we’re excited to bring back this iconic menu item.

“Knowing how popular the McRib is, we had no choice – we had to make it. It was time to satisfy the appetites of McRib enthusiasts across the country.”

McDonald’s has not confirmed how long the McRib will be returning to the UK, so is advising customers to act quickly. The burger costs £4.49 for a single burger and £6.19 as part of a medium value-added meal.
