The story of Lyle and Erik Menendez’

Monster: The Story of Lyle and Erik Menendez“ premiered on Friday and is quickly becoming the latest hit from Netflix and Ryan Murphy.

The miniseries is the new installment in Murphy’s “Monster” franchise with the streamer and follows the huge success of “Dahmer: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story,” starring Evan Peters. Ian Brennan once again worked with the mega-producer to bring the story of the Menendez brothers to the screen, from their traumatic childhood to the infamous night they murdered their parents, José and Kitty Menendez.

The miniseries attempts to find out who the real monsters were in the sensational murder trial. The Menendez brothers captivated America because their televised trial was one of the first of its kind. The two boys killed their parents on August 20, 1989, when they were only 18 and 21 years old. Their lawyer called it self-defense, but both were convicted of premeditated murder and sentenced to life in prison without parole after two trials.

A period-specific soundtrack featuring artists such as Vanilla Ice and – in an ironic gesture from Murphy – the feuding brother duo Milli Vanilli helps drive the story forward.
