There’s a new No. 1, but it’s not Georgia or Oregon

The ESPN FPI rankings are updated every week throughout the college football season, and the update after Week 8 is sure to raise eyebrows among fans across the country.

Texas was the No. 1 team before losing to Georgia in an incredible game Saturday night in Austin. That means the Longhorns dropped to No. 2 this week.

Surely that means either Georgia, which beat Texas, or Oregon, which is undefeated and picked up a win over Ohio State, is the new frontrunner, right?

Incorrect.

Ohio State moved up to No. 1 in the ESPN Football Power Index (FPI) Top 25 this week. Here’s a look at the full top 25 rankings after Week 8:

  2. Texas
  3. Alabama
  4. Georgia
  5. Ole Miss
  6. Tennessee
  7. Notre Dame
  8. Oregon
  9. Penn State
  10. Miami
  11. Indiana
  12. LSU
  13. Clemson
  14. Texas A&M
  15. USC
  16. SMU
  17. Louisville
  18. Kansas State
  19. Iowa State
  20. Mizzou
  21. Boise State
  22. Florida
  23. South Carolina
  24. Colorado
  25. Wisconsin

That’s 10 SEC teams in the top 25. The SEC teams that didn’t make the cut were Oklahoma (29), Arkansas (31), Auburn (32), Kentucky (41), Vanderbilt (42) and Mississippi State (60). .

Can Texas, Alabama or Georgia climb to No. 1 in the coming weeks? We’ll see if anyone manages to dethrone the Buckeyes as the season progresses. Tune in next week to see how FPI changes after Week 9.
