TVM Airport receives award for environmental protection

Thiruvananthapuram: The Thiruvananthapuram International Airport Limited (TIAL) was awarded the Environmental Protection Waste recycling Excellence Award from Greentech FoundationThe award recognizes TIAL’s efforts to implement waste-free landfilling.
TIAL processes various types of waste including plastic, wet and dry municipal solid waste (MSW) and limited amounts of hazardous waste. The airport’s waste generation patterns and management strategies are based on the Cradle to Cradle principle. TIAL has consistently prioritized waste minimization by applying the 5R strategy: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Reprocess and Recover.
With a landfill diversion rate of 99.5%, Thiruvananthapuram International Airport is a notable example of effective waste management and sustainability practices in the aviation industry. TIAL has adopted a comprehensive approach to asset and environmental management by implementing best practices, including innovative use of biogas for energy generation, efficient management of wet waste through organic converters, meticulous maintenance of compliance-related records and active stakeholder engagement through awareness initiatives.
The award was presented to the TIAL representative at a ceremony held in Guwahati, Assam. The event also showcased TIAL’s insights on zero waste disposal to landfill concept and its commitment to environmental conservation.

Concrete waste clogs Jambhulwadi Lake
Environmentalists have raised concerns over the continued discharge of sewage from RMC plants into Jambhulwadi Lake. Despite claims by the sewage treatment plants, the sewage is polluting the lake and clogging the nullahs. A recent inspection by the MPCB did not find any direct evidence of RMC effluents but found sewage problems. Local residents insist that the sewage continues to flow into the lake and demand administrative action to prevent the lake from being destroyed.
