When Halloween approaches in the Delaware Valley, there is usually a chill in the air. But this year is the region It’s predicted to be its warmest Halloween ever in almost 80 years. And that’s not a trick.

For October 31, 2024, the NEXT Weather team predicts a high of 82 degrees, which could match the warmest Halloween record set in 1946.

This 82-degree record marks the only time since records began more than 150 years ago that Philadelphia has experienced a high temperature in the 80s on Halloween.

So you don’t need heavy coats and winter gear for trick-or-treating. At 4 p.m., when some younger ghouls and goblins head out to collect their candy, temperatures are around 79 degrees. At 6 p.m., temperatures dip just slightly to 76 degrees. It will be a mild and breezy 72° by 8 p.m.

The coldest Halloween morning in Philadelphia, however, was in 1966, when temperatures dropped to a frigid 26 degrees. The coldest day was recorded in 1925 at 41 degrees.

In 2011 and 2012, our region celebrated Halloween due to a major weather event. During “Snowtober” 2011, 0.3 inches of snow fell at Philadelphia International Airport on October 29, but parts of the northern suburbs saw up to 6 inches of snow. This year was also the last time temperatures fell below freezing on Halloween.

The next year, the area was just hit by Superstorm Sandy. Millions were without power and trees and branches were downed across the region after Sandy made landfall on October 29. Halloween celebrations have been postponed or canceled across much of the region.
