Tigers face Colonels in Week 2

play

BATON ROUGE – LSU football is looking to get back on its feet, and a visit to in-state FCS opponent Nicholls State might be just the ticket.

The No. 19 Tigers (0-1) host the Colonels (0-1) at Tiger Stadium for their first home game of the 2024 season on Saturday night (6:30 p.m., ESPN+). Although only 69 miles separate LSU and Nicholls, they have never played each other.

Brian Kelly and his team lost their season opener 27-20 to No. 12 USC on Sunday in Las Vegas, a game in which the Trojans took a lead in the final seconds. That loss marked the fifth consecutive season-opening loss for LSU, which last won a season opener in 2019.

Nicholls State lost 25-17 at Louisiana Tech last week, but took an early lead and was within striking distance of the Bulldogs throughout the game.

With 6:43 minutes remaining in the third quarter, the Tigers are starting to extend their lead over the Colonels and are now leading 37-21.

Nussmeier set a new career high with four passing touchdowns in a game. His fourth TD of the night went to Lacy, who caught his second TD of the night on a 6-yard pitch-and-catch in the third quarter.

The junior receiver intercepted the errant drag pass, turned around and raced into the end zone. As he closed in, so did a Nicholls defender, and Lacy decided to jump over him, but he took the brunt of it as he was hit and fell on his lower back. He was slow to get back to his feet.

With 12:17 minutes remaining in the first half, LSU leads Nicholls 16-7.

The Colonels march the entire way down the field, 13 plays, 84 yards, and end the game with a 1-yard touchdown run by running back Collin Guggenheim.

With 30 seconds left in the first quarter, LSU’s lead has shrunk to 9-7.

From the 1-yard line, junior quarterback Garrett Nussmeier threw a touchdown to freshman tight end Trey’Dez Green. LSU capped a 7-play, 27-yard drive with the touchdown pass.

With 7:51 remaining in the first quarter, the Tigers lead the Colonels 9-0.

Nicholls’ bad snap on his punt attempt forces punter Kylan Dupre to kick the ball out of the back of the end zone. The Tigers score first on a safety and take a 2-0 lead at 11:15 of the first quarter.
