Tracking power outages at Duke Energy in the Carolinas during Hurricane Helene on September 27, 2024

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) – Thousands of Duke Energy customers were without power across the Carolinas Friday as Hurricane Helene made landfall on the Gulf Coast.

Away As of 3:30 a.m. Friday, Sept. 27, nearly 45,000 Duke customers were without power in North Carolina and South Carolina. Duke’s said the outages appeared to be concentrated in the central and western regions of the Carolinas Failure map.

The outages occurred during Hurricane Helene’s landfall in Florida late Thursday. The hurricane was expected to bring even stronger winds and heavier rains to the Carolinas on Friday, particularly in the foothills mountains.

Strong winds can knock down trees and branches, which could destroy power lines. Duke Energy said Wednesday it was preparing for outages related to the storm.
