Tropical Depression 7 forms in the Atlantic; forecast to develop into Tropical Storm Gordon

Tropical Depression Seven formed in the eastern Atlantic Ocean on Wednesday morning and is expected to be the next named storm of the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season.

The newly formed tropical depression, known as Invest 93L, comes as the Atlantic hurricane season reaches its peak. This week, meteorologists are already observing five systems across the Atlantic region.

What’s new about Tropical Depression 7?

According to the latest warning from the National Hurricane Center (NHC), Tropical Depression Seven is located about 310 miles west of the Cape Verde Islands in the eastern Atlantic Ocean. It has maximum sustained winds of 35 mph.

Where is Tropical Depression 7 moving?

The NHC said Tropical Depression Seven is likely to remain over open water for the next few days.

It is currently moving west-northwest at a speed of 29 km/h. It is expected to slow down over the next few days but maintain its west to west-northwest direction.

Some strengthening is expected over the next 48 hours, and Tropical Depression Seven could develop into a tropical storm Wednesday night or Thursday. Once that happens, it will be named Gordon.
