In case you’ve just joined us, Donald Trump was apparently the target of another assassination attempt on Sunday at one of his golf courses in Florida, the FBI said.

The former president is safe and unharmed, and the FBI says it is investigating the latest security incident involving the Republican presidential candidate. Just nine weeks earlier, he survived an earlier assassination attempt in which a sniper shot him in the ear at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.

Yesterday, a man was seen aiming an AK-47 rifle at Trump’s golf course in West Palm Beach while hiding in bushes about 400 to 500 yards from the politician. As he fled the scene, he was spotted by Secret Service agents, who opened fire.

According to local sheriff Ric Bradshaw, he was later stopped by police in a Nissan SUV and taken into custody in a neighboring county.

The suspect has since been identified as Ryan Wesley Routh (58). The alleged shooter is said to have criticized Trump on social media and expressed his willingness to “fight and die” in Ukraine, a cause that was apparently very close to his heart.

Authorities have since found two backpacks and a GoPro camera hanging on a fence at the crime scene.

• Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he was “relieved” that Trump was safe, but warned that people should not “rely on their luck.”
• Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, a close friend of Trump, said: “We pray for you, Mr. President!”
• Italy’s Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini, also a Trump supporter, said: “Trials, violent criminals, fanatics and communists will not stop us. (We are) moving forward with our heads held high.”
• Meanwhile, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese expressed his “concern” and said it was “a good thing” that Trump was safe. He added: “Everyone wants the democratic process to be peaceful and orderly.”
