Unique Mexican restaurant opens in downtown Marquette

MARQUETTE, Michigan (WLUC) – El Santo Tacos and Tequila at 113 West Baraga Avenue is the newest Mexican restaurant in Marquette and is owned by the same people as La Catrina.

Rachel Mantyla tried the new spot for the first time on Monday. She is happy to have another Mexican restaurant in downtown Marquette after the closure of Sol Azteca.

“Unfortunately, since we were there the whole time, they’re closed, as everyone knows,” Mantyla said. “So when we heard El Santo was opening, we thought we had to go and check it out.”

She had the OMG nachos which had chicken, shrimp and steak.

The restaurant claims to have the best margarita in the Upper Peninsula.

“Freshly squeezed oranges, limes, grapefruits, everything,” said manager Ramon Ayala. “It’s worth it, you know. It tastes better because you don’t add any extra flavors. It just is what it is.”

Ayala says they try to give customers the best service possible. El Santo strives to be unique and you’ll find photo booths throughout the restaurant to take that perfect photo.

“We took some pictures down there in the photo booths and that was something I was really happy about when we walked through the door.”

Ayala says they worked hard to make this happen and did everything with passion.

“We’re lucky to have this,” Ayala said. “It’s another way to get food. It’s new and I mean, this is what people needed.”

Ayala thanks the community for their support.
