Unpacking Austin Airport’s West Gate Expansion

Unpacking Austin Airport’s West Gate Expansion

The Travel with AUS The expansion program is underway – and new details on one of the projects at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport are lift up.

The West Gate expansion will create 84,500 square meters of new space on three levels on the west side of the Barbara Jordan Terminal. The project reached new heights in July 2024: The first steel beam was erected.

Two images showing ongoing construction at an airport. On the left, a large construction crane is seen lifting a steel beam against a backdrop of a partly cloudy sky. The construction area below includes the airport terminal with equipment and workers on site. On the right, a group of construction workers, all wearing hard hats and safety vests, are gathered around a large steel beam, signing it as part of a ceremonial event. The beam is resting on concrete supports and the surrounding area shows signs of active construction.

With the installation of the first steel beam, the airport will now look different every day, said the project managers.

Meeting the needs

Since ABIA continues Breaking records for passenger numbers, the expansion is key to keeping up with the airport’s demand. Other planned innovations include the West Infill Project and the expansion of Hall B, a hall with 20 gates, which will be connected to the Barbara Jordan Terminal by a new tunnel.

The vision for Concourse B requires the removal of three gates. To compensate for this loss, the West Gate expansion will add three new gates.

What to expect

A standout feature of the West Gate expansion is a new mezzanine with an outdoor balcony and indoor viewing area where travelers can relax and enjoy views of downtown and the West Runway.

An exterior view of an airport terminal expansion with large glass walls and modern architecture. Several jet bridges lead from the terminal to parked aircraft, including a prominent United Airlines plane in the foreground. The terminal has several gates, numbers 33 and 37 are visible. Ground handling equipment and airport personnel work around the aircraft, preparing them for takeoff or arrival. The sky is clear with a few clouds, and the overall scene reflects a busy but orderly airport environment.
