UPDATE: Teenage girl killed in West Hawaii crash, identified

UPDATE 4:01 p.m

Police have identified the teenage driver who died in a two-vehicle crash in Waikoloa this morning as 17-year-old Jessica Ann Sprinkle of Waikoloa.

PREVIOUSLY

Police are investigating a two-vehicle crash in Waikoloa this morning that killed a 17-year-old Waikoloa woman and seriously injured three teenagers.

Police investigators responding to a report of an accident at the intersection of Mamalahoa Highway (Highway 190) and Waikoloa Road (Highway 191) at 7:59 a.m. discovered a silver 2022 Chevrolet Spark sedan to the left of the Waikoloa Road turned onto Highway 190 when it was broadsided by a southbound white 2018 Peterbilt tractor-trailer carrying 5,000 gallons of water.

The 17-year-old driver of the Chevrolet was taken to Kona Community Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 11:51 a.m

Police did not identify the 17-year-old driver and were waiting to notify next of kin.

The 59-year-old male driver of the Peterbilt was not injured in the collision.

There were three female passengers in the Chevrolet Spark, all of whom were seriously injured.

They were taken to North Hawaii Community Hospital for initial treatment. Two of the passengers were later transported to Oahu for further treatment, and the third passenger remains at North Hawaii Community Hospital.

Police have opened a major traffic collision investigation and are asking anyone who may have witnessed the collision to contact Officer Dayson Taniguchi at (808) 326-4646 ext. 229 or email [email protected].

This is the 24th traffic fatality this year, compared to 15 this time last year.
