Walmart recalls apple juice due to elevated arsenic levels

The Food and Drug Administration has ordered a recall of Great Value apple juice from Walmart. According to the FDA’s recall alert, approximately 9,535 of these products are affected. The juices were manufactured by Refresco Beverages US Inc.

The recalled product is a six-pack of 8-ounce plastic bottles filled with 100% apple juice. The recall number is F-1746-2024, the best-by date is DEC2824, CT89-6. The UPC is 0-78742-29655-5. According to the FDA, “the product contains inorganic arsenic above the limit established by industry guidelines.”

The FDA recall claims the products were sold at Walmart stores in Alabama, Connecticut, Delaware, the District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Mississippi, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Puerto Rico, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Vermont, Virginia and West Virginia.

The Hill reports that a Walmart spokesperson said the company had removed the products from its shelves. “The health and safety of our customers is always our highest priority,” the spokesperson said. “We have removed this product from our affected stores and are working with the supplier to investigate.”

According to the FDA website, the recall has been upgraded to Class II. According to the agency, this is “a situation in which use of or exposure to an unlawful product may result in temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences, or the likelihood of serious adverse health consequences is remote.”

The FDA has not released any information on the number of illnesses that may be linked to the recall, but the levels found in the affected apple juice are so low that the agency does not believe there will be any serious health problems.

This recall follows a candy recall conducted at Walmart in May, according to NJ.com. According to a recall notice from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, Palmer Candy Company candy and snacks sold at retailers such as Walmart and Target have been recalled due to the risk of salmonella poisoning. The recall was initiated in May and reclassified as a “Class I recall” on August 6, 2024.
