Washington Commanders release kicker after difficulties against Tampa Bay Buccaneers

The Washington Commanders need a new kicker.

The Commanders announced that they have released kicker Cade York, who missed both field goal attempts in the Week 1 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

York’s first missed shot came from 47 yards with less than a minute left in the first quarter. Then he missed one from 56 yards on Washington’s first drive of the second half. Although York’s misses didn’t affect the outcome, his lack of success was enough to make him give up.

The Commanders traded York from the Cleveland Browns for a seventh-round pick during training camp, but according to NFL insider Mike Garafolo, the deal included a clause that stated York had to play two games for the deal to go through. So by kicking him after one game, the deal is null and void and the Commanders get to keep their seventh-round pick.

In a related move, the Commanders will sign veteran kicker Austin Seibert, according to NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero. Seibert completed training camp with the New York Jets but did not make the 53-man roster. Now he joins the Commanders and hopes to stay there.
