Voting is important in every state, but some states receive more attention in presidential years – such as Pennsylvania for the 2024 election.

Most states consistently vote red or blue, about 38 states that consistently voted for the same party between 2000 and 2016, or are clearly trending in an overwhelming direction heading into the election. But then there are the states that are very specific about not doing this or polling, which makes them less predictable and puts them in the category of swing states or battleground states.

Much emphasis has been placed on Pennsylvania because its 19 electoral votes remain blue and could go to Vice President Kamala Harris or return to former President Donald Trump. The state helped President Joe Biden win the 2020 election after he voted for Trump in 2016.

Here’s a breakdown of what a swing state is, who the swing states are, and why they’re important.

What is a Swing State?

A swing state or battleground state is a state in which the US presidential candidates enjoy similar levels of support from the Democratic and Republican parties and can therefore be won by both parties.

Where are the swing states in the 2024 election?

Political campaigns invest a lot of time, money and energy in the crucial battleground states to collect enough votes to reach 270.

The swing states during the 2024 election were Pennsylvania, Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina and Wisconsin.

Why are these swing states so important?

These swing states are important because they total 93 electoral votes this year and a total of 270 electoral votes are required to win the presidential election.

Pennsylvania holds the lion’s share of the vote for a swing state:

  • Arizona, 11 electoral votes.
  • Georgia, 16 electoral votes.
  • Michigan, 15 electoral votes.
  • North Carolina, 16 electoral votes.
  • Pennsylvania, 19 electoral votes.
  • Wisconsin, 10 electoral votes.
  • Nevada, 6 electoral votes.
