What you should know before you vote

LAKE CHARLES, La. (KPLC) – Election Day is here! Louisiana residents will go to the polls on Tuesday, November 5, 2024, and we’ve put together a guide with everything you need to know.

Important election dates and information:

  • Election opening times on election day: 6:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m

  • To find your polling place, click HERE to visit the voter portal.

Before you vote, know:

  • Be sure to bring an official ID or driver’s license with you.
  • Do not wear campaign paraphernalia; No canvassing is permitted within 600 feet of a polling place. This includes buttons, hats and shirts.
  • Weapons are not allowed at the polls, except for uniformed or on-duty police officers.
  • If you believe there is an error in your ballot, report it before casting your vote. Once a vote is cast, nothing more can be done, the clerk said.

The United States will elect its next president, but we probably won’t know who that will be on election night.

We also have some significant races on the ballot here in SWLA, such as U.S. Representative for Louisiana’s Third and Fourth Congressional Districts, a constitutional amendment related to coastal protection, a Third District judge, and mayors of Oakdale, Elton, and Fenton .

Here you will find lists of what is on the ballot in each municipality:
