play

For the first time in nearly two decades, an American has made it to the final of the US Open.

American Taylor Fritz will face Italian Jannik Sinner in the men’s final of the US Open at Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York City on Sunday. Fritz is seeking his first major title and wants to become the first American to win a major title since Andy Roddick in 2003.

No American has made it to the final of the US Open since Roddick in 2006.

Sinner is seeking his second major title of the year. In January, Sinner won the Australian Open, also on hard court, after trailing two sets to zero against Daniil Medvedev. Since 1988, only three men have won the hard court doubles, the Australian Open and the US Open in the same year (Mats Wilander, 1988; Roger Federer, 2004, 2006, 2007; and Novak Djokovic, 2011, 2015, 2023).

Jannik Sinner’s doping controversy

Sinner, the world’s No. 1 tennis player, parted ways with his fitness coach Umberto Ferrara and his physiotherapist Giacomo Naldi before the tournament due to a doping saga.

A day after his victory at the Cincinnati Open, the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITA) announced that Sinner had tested positive twice for clostebol, an anabolic steroid banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency, in a test at the BNP Paribas Open on March 10 and an out-of-competition test on March 18. Sinner claimed that a member of the support team regularly used an over-the-counter spray containing clostebol to treat his own wound before giving Sinner daily massages and sports therapy, “leading to unwitting transdermal contamination.”

After an investigation, the ITA accepted Sinner’s explanation and concluded that the “violation was not intentional.”
