Where in Maine is this ice cream shop with reasonable prices?

This was the perfect summer in Maine for ice cream, but sometimes it can get pretty expensive!

I recently went to the legendary and famous Red’s Dairy Freeze in South Portland. I hadn’t been there in a long time. I had been cutting back on my ice cream consumption and when I did indulge, it was hard ice cream. But if you go out for a cone these days, a small portion can cost six to nine dollars! Not at Red’s.

Red’s only serves soft serve ice cream and I got a Kinder Cone*, a mix of chocolate and vanilla with chocolate sprinkles. It cost me $3.40. It was the perfect dessert I was looking for.

*I bought a kid’s size because someone changed the size of the ice cream cones and they are all a size bigger. Small is actually medium, medium is definitely large and large usually comes with a wheelbarrow!

Red’s Dairy Freeze in South Portland has been around since the 1950s.

Didn’t Red’s Dairy Freeze in South Portland, Maine burn down?

In the spring of 2010, an electrical fire occurred. Unfortunately, they had to tear down the building and rebuild it with the help of local fundraisers. Red’s was rebuilt looking exactly the same as before and reopened in March 2011.
