Where is Hope Solo now? All about her life after the USWNT

Untold: Hope Solo vs US Soccer was just released on Netflix and the documentary raises many questions about what the former US soccer team goalkeeper is up to now.

The 43-year-old was cut from the US women’s national team in 2016 after more than 15 years of being a part of it, but she has continued to appear in the spotlight since then. Now the documentary looks at what she has been up to since her suspension.

What happened to Hope Solo?

Hope was involved in several scandals during her time on the U.S. women’s national team and afterward.

In 2016, she was suspended from the team for six months after commenting that the Swedish national team played like “a bunch of cowards” after defeating the United States at the 2016 Rio Olympics. Los Angeles TimesKevin BaxterHer contract was also terminated.

In the documentary, Hope claims she was suspended for demanding equal pay. (In 2016, Hope and four other players — Megan Rapinoe, Alex Morgan, Carli Lloyd and Rebecca Sauerbrunn — filed a workplace discrimination complaint, pointing out that the women’s soccer team was not paid or treated nearly as well as the men’s team, despite a much better record.)

“In 2015, I knew I had found out something I shouldn’t have found out,” she said in the documentary. “But at that moment, I had no idea I might have made an enemy. A year later, I was fired.”

“They said, ‘She was a sore loser,'” she continued, “but I think she was really true because I wanted to take money from the U.S. Soccer team.” In 2022, the players received a $24 million severance package from U.S. Soccer.

In 2022, Hope was arrested for drunk driving after someone noticed her unconscious behind the wheel of her vehicle in a parking lot for more than an hour, according to ESPN. (Her two children were also in the car.) She later pleaded guilty and entered rehab later that year, according to People.

In a statement released after pleading guilty, Hope said she had made “a huge mistake.”

“By far the worst mistake of my life,” she said. “I underestimated what a destructive part of my life alcohol had become. The good thing about making such a big mistake is that you learn hard lessons quickly. Learning those lessons was difficult and sometimes very painful.”

Where is Hope Solo now?

Hope was inducted into the National Soccer Hall of Fame in 2023. She postponed the date by a year due to her rehab stay, per People.

The documentary shows that Hope lives in Asheville, North Carolina and is spiritually closer to her father, who spent part of her childhood in the woods. Her father died of a heart attack in 2007.

“My father loved the peace and quiet of his tent in the woods,” she said. “And after everything that happened, I knew I needed a fresh start. And out here, I feel closer to him than ever… and stronger.”

Hope has a podcast called Hope Solo speaks to 2023, during which she chatted with various public figures. She is also a mother of twins and is still married to former NFL player Jerramy Stevens.

Hope is not very active on social media—her last Instagram post was on August 10, when she congratulated the U.S. national team and goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher on winning the gold medal.
