Whether Emily-Gabriel-Camille or Gabriel-Emily-Alfie, Emily’s love life has never been smooth sailing. However, by the end of the first five episodes of the fourth season, it seemed as though Lily Collins’ title character had finally begun the beginning of her happy ending with her attractive chef neighbor.

Eugenio Franceschini is a second generation actor born in Verona, Italy.

Eugenio Franceschini, 32, was born in September 1991 in Verona, Italy, to actors. In an interview with Vanity Fair ItalyHe credited his parents with encouraging his love of acting.

“I discovered my passion for acting thanks to my father, a farmer’s son from Verona who, after studying medicine, gave up everything to become a street actor,” he told the outlet. “His father never forgave him. In Bologna he met my mother, an actress who was good at puppetry and children’s theater. Together they traveled the world and I with them.”

According to Franceschini, he went through a rebellious phase as a teenager, staying in Verona to attend high school and “doing everything I had never done before”. Eventually he went back to touring with his father, who encouraged him to pursue a career as a film actor.

“I worked on the production alone with my father for two years,” says the actor. “He was the one who told me that street theatre was no longer a viable option, so I decided to try cinema. He has appeared in several stage and film productions in Italy.

In his late teens, Franceschini moved to Rome to attend the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia, Italy’s prestigious national film school, which accepts only a handful of applicants each year. Eugenio Franceschini and Lily Collins quickly became friends while filming together.

Talk to PEOPLEFranceschini recalled the landing of his Emily in Paris role while filming other projects. He said the opportunity came as a “surprise” and described his experience on the show as an “unexpected gift” and “great joy.”

“Everything happened very quickly,” he told the outlet. “When I was chosen, I was filming a TV series here in Italy, so I didn’t have time to realize what was happening. So I threw myself into something.”

The actor also added that he quickly hit it off with Collins. “I’ve worked with Lily the whole time, so, yeah, she’s (my closest friend),” he told the outlet. He even gave Collins special praise in his Instagram post promoting the show, writing, “Thank you to (Emily in Paris Director Andrew Fleming) and @lilyjcollins. You are special.
