Widespread fire: A fast-spreading brush fire in Malibu burns at least two homes; PCH closed in both directions near Malibu Canyon Road

MALIBU, Calif. (KABC) — At least two homes were damaged Wednesday as a fast-burning brush fire burned along the Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu.

The so-called Broad Fire broke out around 9:30 a.m. near PCH and Malibu Canyon Road, near Pepperdine University, scorching about 50 acres. There have been no immediate reports of injuries so far.

The fire’s progression was halted early Wednesday afternoon, the Los Angeles County Fire Department said in a statement.

As of Wednesday afternoon, the fire was 60% contained.

Malibu city officials urged residents in the area to seek shelter but warned them to be prepared for possible evacuations.

All lanes of PCH were closed from Corral Canyon to Webb Way, and emergency generators for traffic signals were placed in the area, Malibu city officials reported on X.

Video from the scene showed flames burning in one home, and county firefighters later said the fire also affected a second building.

The fire broke out amid a red flag warning of critical fire danger due to strong Santa Ana winds and low humidity.

Nearby Pepperdine University reported no impact to its operations but notified students of the road closure in the area.
